La Sylphide & Paquita
at the Grahamstown Arts Festival

12 - 21 July 2009
Guy Butler Memorial Theatre, Grahamstown

Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) will present La Sylphide at the Guy Butler Memorial Theatre in July, 2009. It is one of the oldest romantic ballets, performed to the music of LǾvenskjold with choreography by August Bournonville. This two-act ballet is set in the Scottish Highlands andÊtells the tale of a young Scotsman, James, who falls in love with an ethereal Sylph, who tempts him into betraying his fiancée, Effie. Madge, the witch, predicts his downfall as he abandons his wedding and follows the SylphÊinto the woods, with tragic consequences.

A must for all ballet-lovers, La Sylphide embraces the energy of the Scottish reel and the gossamer-light sylphs at play, together with the myths and beliefs embedded in Scottish folklore.

The Sylph is danced by CTCB’s principal ballerina Megan Swart, as well as Laura Bosenberg and Lauren Rogers. James will be danced by Robin van Wyk, Thomas Thorne and Xola Putye.

The role of Madge, the witch, will be performed by Mervyn Williams, alternating with Johnny Bovang. Other leading roles are dances by Jane Fidler, Manie Irving, Janine Laidlow and Megan du Plessis.

The corps de ballet includes dancers from the Cape Junior Ballet, who supplement the Cape Town City Ballet in the traditional second act, danced in true Bournonville style. La Sylphide is preceded by the classic Paquita, designed to showcase the artistry and athleticism of today’s dancer in a series of solos, pas de deux and ensembles, dressed in traditional tutus and performed to the stylish music of Ludwig Minkus.
