Summer Spectacular

27 February - 2nd March 2008
Artscape Theatre

Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) & Dance for All Youth Company (DFAYC) jointly present Summer Spectacular at Artscape Theatre from 27th February to 2nd March 2008.

The repertoire selected for the season consists of thrilling pas de deux and solos from well-known great classical ballets such as Don Quixote, Le Corsaire, Paquita, Giselle and Bacchanale, amongst others.

Royal Ballet-trained Megan Swart will perform Kenneth McMillan's exquisite Concerto pas de deux with Brock Hayhoe and Reika Sato, recently a finalist in the South African International Ballet Competition, will perform Don Quixote with Emmerich Schmollgruber. Members of the Dance for All Youth Company include Zandile Constable, who recently danced the lead in Kami, as well as Xola Putye and Nqaba Mafilika, all of whom have recently returned from a tour to New Zealand, where they performed once again with the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble.

The ever-popular Tango Nights, Sean Bovim's hugely successful neo-classical ballet, will be presented in its entirety. Bovim created the dynamic work in 2007 to great acclaim by audiences and critics and the work features innovative pas de deux such as the breath-taking 'Table Duet', which will be performed by Laura Bosenberg and Robin van Wyk, and the exciting finale 'Roxanne', performed to the emotive music of the film Moulin Rouge.

This season marks the fourth collaboration between CTCB, South Africa's premier ballet company, and DFAYC, one of the country's newest additions to the professional dance scene. This dynamic new season will herald the dawn of a new era between the two companies as they formally announce their intention to collaborate on a regular basis. Says Philip Boyd, the Founder and Artistic Director of Dance for All, 'I'm extremely excited about this new partnership as it will give our dancers more artistic opportunities and the chance to perform more regularly at Artscape.' Elizabeth Triegaardt, the Executive Director of Cape Town City Ballet, added that she is equally optimistic about establishing a formal collaboration between the two companies. 'It will provide much-needed scope for the pooling of our resources and expertise, and having Phyllis Spira and Philip Boyd's input will certainly add value to the artistic endeavours of both entities,' she concluded.
