 10 - 25 May 2008 Artscape Opera House

The Cape Town City Ballet presents Veronica Paeper's 3 act ballet, The Merry Widow, from 10-25 May 2008 at Artscape Opera House.

Following the great success of the South African International Ballet Competition held recently in Cape Town, the CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET has succeeded in enticing the award-winning Latvian couple, Elza Leimane and Raimond Martinov, back to our city, to dance the leading roles in the forthcoming production of The Merry Widow in May 2008.

This intoxicating tale of money, romance and intrigue takes place at the beginning of the 20th century in a fictitious Pontevedrinian embassy in the heart of Paris. The ambassador's staff are in an uproar as their state coffers have been emptied. A telegram announces the arrival of Madame Anna Glawari, a recently widowed billionairess. Baron Mirko Zeta, the ambassador, decides she must marry his first secretary, Danillo Danilovitch, to keep her fortune in Pontevedrinian hands.

Set to Franz Lehàr's lavish score, The Merry Widow boasts visual highlights from spectacular ballroom scenes and toe tapping Can Cans. The women smoulder with sensuality and the men ooze seductive charm. A special gala evening will be held on the 24th of May at 19h00, which includes a formal reception after the performance, where the audience will have the opportunity to meet the guest stars and cast of The Merry Widow and enjoy a waltz to a string quartet in the Marble Foyer. All performances will be accompanied by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. |
