 18 - 20 July 2008
Artscape Opera House, Cape Town

CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET goes exotic with its next short programme - 5 performances only -featuring scenes from ballets rarely seen in South Africa today. The current artistic and economic climate make it impossible to mount, for instance, Veronica Paeper's full-length Spartacus, last seen here in 1995. This programme features extracts from the second act of the ballet, set in the smouldering confines of a desert tent, enabling audiences to experience the excitement of her demanding and imaginative choreography for the characters of Aegina (Megan Swart or Janine Laidlow), Gracchus (Johnny Bovang) and Crassus (Xola Putye).

Also on the programme is the pas de deux from Sheherazade, danced by Lauren Rogers and Manie Irving, and scenes from the second act of Raymonda, featuring Laura Bosenberg and newcomer, Frieda Mennen - all with the emphasis on seduction, intrigue and allure. |
