Ballet Magic

19, 20 and 21 July 2007
Masque Theatre

The Cape Town City ballet will present a short season of exciting works from recently premiered ballets, Nomvula - After the Rain, Tango Nights and excerpts from act 3 of The Nutcracker. Nomvula - After The Rain is a ballet to the music of FreshlyGround and other leading South African artistes and premiered at Artscape Opera House earlier
this year.
A fusion of ballet, contemporary and African dance gives Nomvula a distinctive South African feel, as does the collaboration with some of Cape Town's best entrepreneurial talent. The dancers are dressed by local designers, Craig Port, Destroy, X&O and Avanglion, all designers from the Young Designers Emporium (YDE). Hip Hop also donate fashion garments and Monkey Biz provide hand-made bead work.
This was all co-ordinated by Cape Town City Ballet's Robin van Wyk and choreographed by Adele Blank, Lindy Raizenberg, Simone Muller, Mbulelo Ndabeni and Theo Ndindwa.

Sean Bovim's new work, Tango Nights is performed to a compilation of different composers and is set in a Tango Cafe. It oscillates between the sensual intimacy of the dancers and the social interactions and relationships of the people at the Cafe and is also dressed by local designers, Malcolm Kluk and Christian Gabriel du Toit.

In contrast to these two ballets, excerpts from The Nutcracker will also be performed, highlighting the versatility of the Cape Town City Ballet and providing a 'classical' touch to the evening. The famous Grand Pas de Deux will round off this programme of ballet magic at the Masque.
