Kami is a dramatic ballet set in Java and the Cape and is danced to the evocative music of Bizet's The Pearl Fishers.

The Cape Town City Ballet and Dance for All Youth Company will collaborate for six performances in June to present David Poole's Kami and Sean Bovim's new work, Tango Nights.
Kami is a dramatic ballet set in Java and the Cape and is danced to the evocative music of Bizet's The Pearl Fishers, with the musical arrangement by Michael Tuffin. It is based on a poem by C. Louis Leipoldt, who wove a fantasy tale around Gysbert van Noodt, the Governor of the Cape, and a Javanese slave girl with whom he falls in love, resulting in a story rich in emotion and laden with conflict. This powerful production received critical acclaim when first performed in 1976 and was subsequently filmed for South African TV in 1979. Sean Bovim creates a new work for this season called Tango Nights. Performed to a compilation of different composers, the ballet is set in a Tango Cafe and oscillates between the sensual intimacy of the dancers and the social interactions and relationships of the people at the Cafe. Ticket prices R60- R100.
