Carmen

25 May – 3 June 2007
Artscape Opera House

Experience this dramatic and visually powerful version of Bizet’s beloved opera.

An alternating cast of four couples will perform the roles of the fiery gypsy Carmen and her jealous lover Don Jose in this dramatic and visually powerful version of Bizet’s beloved opera. Principal ballerina, Marianne Bauer will be dancing her first season without the company of her fellow senior principal dancer and husband, Coert Grobbelaar. Their hugely popular dancing partnership that mesmerized audiences over the years sadly ended in February 2007 as Coert Grobbelaar announced an early retirement from the Cape Town City Ballet at the age of twenty nine.

For this season, British dancer Jonathan Ollivier returns to Cape Town to dance the part of Don Jose opposite Marianne's Carmen. Other casts are Lara Turk and Lee Fennell, Tracy Li and Daniel Rajna and Megan Swart with Brock Hayhoe. Carmen features the entire Cape Town City Ballet ensemble and is accompanied by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra at selected performances.
