Following a sell-out success of SwingTime at the Ballet, the Cape Town City Ballet prepares one of the more popular and enduring romantic ballets of all time, Giselle.

For more than a century, since its premier in 1841 in Paris, this two- act romantic production has enjoyed huge success and has become one of the best -loved ballets of all time. Known as the "Hamlet" of dance, Giselle highlights the ballerina as a dancer and an actress. The story tells of a young peasant girl, Giselle, who falls in love with a prince named Albrecht, who is disguised as a peasant. When his identity is revealed to Giselle by the jealous Hilarion, she goes mad and dies of a broken heart. |

She becomes one of the Wilis, spirits of young girls who die of broken hearts before their wedding day. The Queen of the Wilis commands Giselle to lure Albrecht to his death, but she dances with him until dawn, when he gently carries her back to her grave.

Cape Town City Ballet's production of Giselle, based on David Poole's version of the ballet is danced to music by Adolphe Adam and has been staged and produced by CTCB's Executive Director, Elizabeth Triegaardt. Giselle features the popular partnerships of Tracy Li with Daniel Rajna and Marianne Bauer with real-life husband Coert Grobbelaar in the leading roles.

Reverting to pure classicism after the resounding success of their recent SwingTime at the Ballet season, Giselle and the programme, Ballet Nouveaux (Artscape Opera House 7- 15 Oct) will satisfy balletic purists and once again reaffirm the versatility of the CTCB's dancers.
