7 July 2005
Artscape Opera House

Cape Town City Ballet pays tribute to Veronica Paeper, one of the most prolific choreoghraphers of the 20th century, who has given South Africa and the Cape Town City Ballet a repertoire of ballets unsurpassed in the history of classical ballet. This programme on the 7th July at the Artsacpe Opera House will feature highlights from many of her best-loved works, including Carmen, Orpheus in the Underworld, Concerto for Charlie, Ten Pieces and many more.

Ms Paeper’s career as a dancer spanned many years and she performed leading roles in many classical ballets with CAPAB Ballet, PACOFS Ballet and PACT Ballet, before turning her attention to choreography. Her first ballet performed by the

Lara Turk and Johnny Bovang in the Emperor Waltz
CAPAB Company at the City Hall in 1972 was John the Baptist, featuring John Simons and the late Ruth Ackermann and with herself in the role of Herodias. In 1974 she was appointed Resident Choreographer for the CAPAB Ballet Company, a position she retained until the company became the Cape Town City Ballet in 1997. She also held the post of Artistic Director from 1990 until the present.

Ms Paeper leaves a legacy of over forty full-length and one-act ballets, which make up the bulk of the Cape Town City Ballet’s repertoire. She has received numerous requests to mount her works for other ballet companies locally and abroad, and is currently in the United Kingdom producing her ballet, Camille, for the Northern Ballet Theatre. She will continue to be involved in the training of the CTCB, and will be invited to reproduce many of the CTCB's well-loved ballet's in the future.
