Queen at the Ballet

30 April - 15 May 2005
Artscape Opera House

Last year, Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) rocked Cape Town when the all-new extravaganza Queen at the Ballet completely sold out. South Africa's first major rock ballet wowed Cape Town audiences as they were treated to an exciting new side to the talent of the CTCB dancers, whose performances are proving to be as scintillating in the more modern ballets as they are in the classics.

The music of one of history's best-loved rock groups, Queen, will once again be performed by the Cape Philharmonic, conducted by Michael Hankinson. Freddy Mercury's exhilarating vocals will be reinterpreted by Duncan Royce and Luciano Zuppa, who will perform live onstage among the dancers along with renowned soprano Zanne Stapelberg.

Choreographer Sean Bovim, who brought the wildly popular SwingTime at the Ballet to the stage, enjoyed a successful career as a dancer with the then CAPAB Ballet before going on to achieve choreographic success around the world. His choreography is famously athletic and technically challenging, and Queen at the Ballet is no exception: inventive, excitingly fresh movements in many different dance styles, from classical ballet to jazz, showcase the many talents of the CTCB dancers.
