 1 - 15 May 2004
Artscape Theatre

In keeping with Cape Town City Ballet's 70th anniversary theme for 2004, the company will be presenting Celebration at the Artscape Theatre from May 1-15, 2004.

To honour South Africa's 10th year of democracy, Professor Elizabeth Triegaardt has commissioned the well-known South African choreographer Adele Blank to write a contemporary work that will aptly reflect South African dance and it's people's diversity.

Music for this piece, titled Syzygy, has been recorded by the talented South African band, Tumi and the Volume.

To celebrate the company's international associations with America and Switzerland, Cape Town City Ballet will be presenting George Balanchine's acclaimed ballet Rubies joining at least 70 other companies around the world that will be performing the great Mr. Balanchine's ballets in celebration of his birth 100 years ago.
Last but not least, the company is proud to be presenting a ballet called All Shall Be by the world-renowned Swiss choreographer Heinz Spoerli, the Artistic Director of the Zurich Ballet. There will also be three performances by the Zurich Junior Ballet on May 4,5 & 6, danced in the Artscape Theatre.

Cape Town City Ballet is most grateful to the Pro-Helvetia Foundation in Cape Town, whose sponsorship has made it possible for the company to perform Mr. Spoerli's ballet and to The Pomegranate Trust for their sponsorship for Balanchine's Rubies. The American Embassy has also contributed towards the air fair for the Balanchine ballet.
