Following the success of the recent sell-out season Giselle, the Cape Town City Ballet now presents two star -studded galas and the full-length epic ballet, Anna Karenina. The two galas on the 21st and 22nd August, will be show-stopping performances taking a look at the past seventy years of ballet in Cape Town and will allow audiences to relive their favorite ballets in the company of special guest stars, Thomas Edur, Agnes Oaks, Desire Samaai and Jonathan Ollivier as well as the members of the Cape Town City Ballet.

Anna Karenina, from the 24th to- 28th August, portrays the anguish of a mother forced to choose between her child and the love of a passionate but unsuitable man. Anna Karenina is based on the epic story by Tolstoy whose central theme shows the destruction of a beautiful married woman through her infatuation with a handsome officer, Vronsky. The ballet is conceived in the romantic style of the novel, there is a grand ball and a glittering scene in the foyer of the St. Petersburg Opera House and also an act set in the country, with a skating scene and a series of peasant dances indicating the passage of seasons.

This production choreographed by Andre Prokovsky will be staged by Elizabeth Triegaardt. The music is Tchaikovsky and decor by Peter Cazalet. The Cape Philharmonic will be conducted by Naum Rousine.

Guest artiste, Tanja Graafland the Prima Ballerina of the former State Theatre Ballet will re-establish her partnership with Cape Town City Ballet's Principal Dancer, Johnny Bovang, while Marianne Bauer and Coert Grobbelaar will re-create the magic of their earlier performances in the leading roles. All performances of this short season are in the Artscape Opera House.
